Farmer Fridays: Cos Wieckowski of Our Family Farm

By | March 2, 2018
Farmer Fridays are all about getting to know the farmers of YYC Growers.

This week we're kicking things off with Cos Wieckowski, a second generation farmer at Our Family Farm. We wanted to find out what life looks like for Cos when he's not farming...

"Winter means finding enough casual work to float me through until spring and the glorious return to farming. Because I spent most of my 20's working in kitchens, I usually end up reaching out to my restaurant network for something (anything, lol). I haven't had a proper job interview in many years and i always end up working with friends!

I maintain my DJ residencies throughout the year as DJ lurkN. I've been DJing every Tuesday and Wednesday for the last 5 years. Here is the current DJ lurkN line-up (usually featuring some great food & drink in the mix too):

  • "PILLOW FIGHT!!!" every Tuesday at Home & Away YYC. I recently moved the party here as Local 510 shut it's doors.
  • "theCLAW!!!" at the Milk Tiger Lounge every Wednesday.
  • "Tiger Styles" the first Saturday of every month at broken city with my friends the Lotus Queen and DJ Applebaum (Marisha and Shauna). They serve authentic Jamaican food from Chef Ouda Ouda.
  • "the BANGOVER: a hip hop brunch" at MARKET eatery on 17th avenue on the first Sunday of every month.
Other than that, I read. And read. And read. The last two books I finished were "Empire of Illusion" by Chris Hedges and "Learning to Die in the Anthropocene" by Roy Scranton. I also spend some time going through "Permaculture: a Designers Manual" by Bill Mollison as well as my rather large pile of various gardening and horticulture books. plenty of reflection on last farm season and scheming about the next one. I also spend time playing with my 19 year old cat, little miss Daisy tuna rat.

I'm on Facebook as cosmic lurknbang and on Instagram as makeing_mistakes. lurknbang is the name of the bicycle gang that I am a part of. We have a diverse crew of lurkers and our main mission is to enjoy each others company while riding bikes."
